New Poway High Principal Excited, Expects Challenges

The incoming Poway High principal says he's most excited about connecting with the students, parents and staff members.

After leading Abraxas High School for just one year, Ron Garrett says he's ready to take on the challenges that will come as Poway High School's new principal.

"I know that Poway is a real powerhouse of a high school and it is a huge honor to be selected as the new principal," Garrett said in an email. "Poway High is 10 times larger than Abraxas and probably has 10 times the number of programs going on so there will be a lot for me to learn."

Garrett will be replacing retiring principal Scott Fisher, who has been an educator for 37 years, an employee of Poway Unified Schol District for 31 years and principal of Poway High for 14. Garrett called Fisher an "exemplary leader," noting the expectations as Poway High's principal are high.

"I plan to meet or exceed those expectations and that will certainly be a challenge.  There will be no shortage of challenges," Garrett said. "However, I’m confident that the talented and professional staff at Poway High will continue the tradition of excellence that Scott Fisher and others have established over the years."

The new principal will be returning to his old stomping grounds, as he taught science at Poway High School for seven years in the 1990s. He says he's looking forward to many things, but called connecting with the students, parents and staff members the most exciting part of it all.

"People are the life and the reason for being of a school," Garrett said. "I got into the education business because I wanted to make a positive impact on people.  The potential to do so at Poway High is practically endless."
