Man Killed in Poway Crash Identified; May Have Been Texting and Driving

Authorities said David Doiron was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Authorities have identified a man they say wasn't wearing his seatbelt when he was killed Wednesday in Poway as David Doiron, 43, from Lakeside.

The Sheriff's Department said Doiron was the sole occupant of the pickup truck, which was reported as driving "fast and erratically" on the road when it veered off of Espola Road and crashed into trees south of Lake Poway Road and north of Trailwind Road.

According to a preliminary investigation, Doiron was receiving or sending text messages at the time of the collision.

Authorities said the truck was traveling at around 60 miles per hour when it hit the curb before hitting trees and ended up landing on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Doiron was trapped in the truck unconscious and still breathing when emergency responders arrived on scene, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The fire department was in the process of extracting Doiron, who was not wearing his seatbelt, from the vehicle when he stopped breathing and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Toxicology tests for drugs and  alcohol are still pending.
