Girls Lacrosse: Titans Overpower Bulldogs 14-3

Nine different players score for Poway, which stays a game behind Rancho Bernardo in the Palomar League race.

It was a total team effort by the Poway High girls lacrosse team Wednesday night in Ramona as the Titans proved too strong for the Bulldogs in a 14-3 win in Palomar League play. Nine different Titans got on the board with goals, and everyone was able to play out of position as this one was out of reach for Ramona (2-12, 1-9) early in the first half.

“We just kept the momentum on our side,” said Poway junior Amanda Shoemaker, who led the Titans with four goals. “We were really able to work on our stick skills and tried to never make the same mistake twice.”

The Titans (12-5, 11-1) are in the midst of their best season under third-year coach Sarah Spilett and seem well on their way to competing for the Palomar League and CIF championships at the end of the season.

Currently, Poway is ranked sixth in the San Diego Section by LAXPower.com and 15th in California by Max Preps, but even with the notoriety, the Titans will not be satisfied until they can bring home the banner when all is said and done.

“The goal is to win it all this year, that’s what our focus is,” said Spilett. “Every year is different, but I’m really happy with the look of this team.”

In 2009 the Titans made it to the quarterfinals of CIF and last year they reached the semifinals before losing in overtime to Torrey Pines. This year might be the Titans' best shot to make it all the way and bring home the championship.

“We’re a really good team, but we have the potential to be great,” said Titans senior Taylor Carter. “If we have the confidence in our play, we can go all the way and win CIF this year.”

This season, Poway has established itself as a powerhouse in San Diego and the Palomar League, holding onto second place just behind Rancho Bernardo, which edged the Titans 6-5 on April 15 to hand Poway its only loss in league play.

“We’re doing well this season because we’re working hard at our practices, and it’s translating to the games,” said Shoemaker. “We expect to go far.”

Next week the Titans look to continue their strong showing in league as they visit Valley Center on Monday and host Westview High on Wednesday. On May 11 they finish the regular season with a rematch against RB that likely will decide the Palomar League crown.
