Cinco de Mayo Trail Run Returns

The Valley Elementary Educational Foundation is back with their three trail runs on May 5.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a healthy way with the whole family!

The Valley Elementary Educational Foundation is back with their to raise money for . The May 5 run will feature three challenging and unique courses on the Lake Poway Trail, perfect for kids, beginners, intermediate runners and the experienced.

The 5k

  • When: May 5 at Lake Poway. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and the 5k starts at 8:30 a.m.
  • What: The 5K is designed to let you pick your pace. Enjoy it as an elite trail runner, as a challenging family run or simply a gorgeous morning nature hike.
  • Cost: Ages 8-17, $25 ($30 race day) and ages 18 and older, $35 ($40 race day).

The 10k

  • When: May 5 at Lake Poway. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and the 10k begins at 7:30 a.m.
  • What: The 10K adds to this course a grueling out-and-back into Blue Sky and a quad-burning climb to the Ramona Dam.
  • Cost: Ages 8-17, $25 ($30 race day) and ages 18 and older, $35 ($40 race day).

The Kathy Young Memorial Kids Race

  • When: May 5 at Lake Poway. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and the warm-up begins at 9:30 a.m. with the actual race taking place at 9:45 a.m.
  • What: Kids will kick off their race with a warm-up 15 minutes before the race starts. Adults who want some fun without the competition can run this 1/3 of a mile race, as can parents who want to chaperon their kids in this fun run.
  • Cost: ages 7 and under: $10 ($15 race day).

The top-three finishers, male and female, in both the 10k and 5k will win $250 for first place; $100 for second place; and $50 for third place. The fastest 5k "Hero" will be awarded a technical racing jersey. All elementary runners will be awarded a participation ribbon.

Ready to run your way into Cinco de Mayo? Skip the beers and tequila this May 5 and head over to Lake Poway for these three runs. More information, including registration details, can be found at the event’s website here.

You can forgo the long lines on Saturday morning and pick up your race packet on May 4 at Laces Running Company in Scripps Ranch from 4-7 p.m.
