Palomar Council PTA Offers $3K in College Scholarships

The PTA is offering seven scholarships for Poway Unified high school seniors planning to attend four- and two-year colleges.

The Palomar Council PTA is offering a handful of scholarships for Poway Unified School District high school seniors on their way to a four-year colleges, plus two other awards for students heading to shorter programs.

Five of the scholarships—$500 awards for four-year colleges—are named in honor of Poway High School alumnus Jessica Leigh Romag, who died July 17, 2004 in a car crash at the age of 20.

"We are honored to be able to carry on Jessica’s legacy through these scholarships and the wonderful young people we have helped over the years,” Romag's mother, Mary, said in a statement.

The Jessica Romag Memorial Scholarships are given in memory of the young woman who "valued her faith, family and friends and participated in leadership activities, church groups and sports with great enthusiasm. She was an excellent student with a sparkling personality, great sense of humor, and kind spirit," according to a news release.

Last year, two Poway High School seniors—Charlotte Chiu and Christopher Tansey—were among the five awardees.

High school seniors planning to attend two-year programs can apply for a pair of $250 Palomar Council Continuing Education Scholarships. The awards can be used to attend "an accredited educational institution that provides up to two years of college-level academic, technical, or vocational instruction with an emphasis on career preparation."

Poway High School seniors Ariel Rodriguez and Ryan Vander Werff received the awards in 2010.
