Cavalleria rusticana, one act opera by Mascagni

Cavalleria is a short but powerful opera that takes place on one fateful Easter day in a Sicilian village.  Here love and passion followed by betrayal and vengeful rage are portrayed with swift action and intense emotion. The hot blood of the story courses through the music of Mascagni, who in his score also has quiet passages, that make the cries of passion ever the more poignant. These lush, beautiful melodies were made popular among opera novices through the Hollywood blockbuster “The Godfather”. The mood is set with a chorus singing the Easter hymn, together with arias and duets that drive the tragic drama. Santuzza's "Voi lo sapete, o mamma" is the opera's best-known aria.

The opera's narration in English, written by award winning local college playwright Emily Sperling, will keep the audience engaged in the drama without being distracted by subtitles.

Fully staged with orchestra, professional singers and opera chorus.

Teresa Hughes-Oliva as Santuzza, Mario Rios as Turiddu

Carlos Oliva as Alfio, Jennylyn Chung as Lola and Carrie Landsgaard as Mamma Lucia,

with Ildoo Kim and Danielle Perrault
