Poll: Would You Vote for Higher Taxes to Save School, College Funding?

Gov. Jerry Brown again calls for support of November initiatives to ease California budget deficit.

Gov. Jerry Brown says K-12 schools and both state university systems will suffer even more cuts and force tuition increases if California voters don’t approve a quarter-cent bump in the state’s sales tax rate to 7.5 percent and boost the income tax rate for people making more than $250,000 a year. His critics say the projected $16 billion state budget deficit can be erased without voter-approved tax hikes in November. Whose arguments do you buy?

First, this proposed tax increase is not specifically for schools. Second, it is the interest of the legislature and the governor's office to make this into a "school" issue, it is not. Now the topic at question, how is the heck is the "education system" an economic engine? What product does it produce? It is huge industry, and many think it should be smaller, but it would be a huge stretch to …   more ›

E-Waste Event to Benefit PUSD

An e-waste recycling event on May 19 will serve as a fundraiser for Poway schools.

Did you know, according to dosomething.org, the United States collectively dumps between 300 million and 400 million electronic items per year, and less than 20 percent of that e-waste is recycled? This weekend, do something about that statistic while helping out our local schools. The Poway High School Robotics Team and IMS Recycling are teaming up on Saturday for an e-waste recycling event that will benefit both the school and our environment. Residents can bring their various e-waste items to Poway High School on May 19, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and IMS Recycling will donate all of the collection proceeds back to schools. Acceptable items at this event include: See the attached flier for a full list of acceptable items. This event benefits …

Baseball fields across the county will soon be filled with more than 1,300 children ready to make a home run in the memory of the slain Poway teen.  Home Run for Chelsea—a fundraiser organized by AAU Baseball, San Diego Show Baseball, Southern California Little Leagues and Pony Baseball that…

My hat is off to the PUSD and the Teachers Union for working so closely together. The open dialogue and transparency while dealing with budget issues have helped keep our district strong.
