Knowing what causes allergies will help you keep the puffy eyes and runny nose to a minimum.
A few weeks ago we discussed how to cope with a pooch or feline that suffers from allergies. But what if you are the one who is sneezing and itching and needs allergy medicine to cope with allergies to your pet? I am allergic to cats, so this is certainly a topic I can relate to. But I’m proud to say that I lived with my feline Minnie for 18 years before she passed away in September. I have to admit that it wasn’t always easy, and I had my share of itchy skin and red, puffy eyes. Despite my occasional suffering, I couldn’t bear the thought of living without my pets, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way. In fact, an estimated one-third of Americans who are allergic to cats (about 2 million people) live with at least one cat in…

If you plan to catch a glimpse of Sunday's partial solar eclipse at about 5:25 p.m., in Southern California, you might want to heed these tips from NASA's Eclipse website. Here's Sunday's eclipse schedule for Southern California: According to the NASA site, it is possible to view the sun safely with the naked eye, however, only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse. Here is information directly from the site: "Partial eclipses, annular eclipses, and the partial phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions. Even when 99 percent of the sun's surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be …
The 32nd annual event attracts dozens of professional riders and ropers from at least 10 states.
They came from Lakeside, Ramona and Poway. They came from Lost Creek and Salina, UT. And they came from Texas, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Nebraska. And that was just the cowboys and cowgirls. Saturday night’s rodeo at a packed Fred Grand Arena was scene to a mix of little girls in pink cowboy hats, teenagers in short cutoffs, buff young men and grandparents in jeans and boots—all celebrating the rodeo culture unique to Ramona. Rodeo queens, drill teams and flag-bearing sponsors showed the hometown had game—all to the beat of booming rock music. Performing or competing, entrants with world-class credentials in the 32nd annual Ramona Rodeo wowed the crowd with team roping, barrel racing, bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc …

The Kirk Jones movie should have implanted the hilarious Dudes’ Group more frequently.
Have you seen the commercials? The one where Chris Rock leads a few guys through a park along with their children? The one that makes you want to watch What to Expect When You’re Expecting so you can laugh at the popular comedian? If yes—know that you won’t be getting much of Rock in the movie that debuts this weekend. The movie, based on the 1984 book of the same name by Heidi Murkoff, is endearing, heartfelt and will bring tears to your eyes at times—but doesn’t tell much about what a man goes through as he is expecting. Instead, the movie focuses heavily on the women and the different obstacles and emotions they face as they expect to bring another life into the world. And, I’m not complaining—I’m just saying. The film features an all-…
Is Polly the pick for your family?
Polly is a 2-year-old spayed female pit bull mix, ID 59503. Polly is a delightful young lady with a cute little face that has endeared her to many of the staff and volunteers. She is currently attending shelter Canine Good Citizen classes with a volunteer who is committed to teaching her everything she needs to know about being a great family pet. She knows most of her basic commands, including sit, down and stay, and she happily comes when she is called. Polly can get really excited and exuberant, so she would do best in a home with experienced dog folks who would understand how to give her clear directions and rules to follow. Polly is available for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society. Her $85 adoption fee includes spay, microchip, …

The rate of 5.2 percent is the lowest since April 2009. In April 2008, it was 2.8 percent.
The unemployment rate in Poway last month dropped by half a percent, reaching its lowest level in three years, according to the state’s Employment Development Department. April’s rate was 5.2 percent, down from 5.7 percent in March. The last time the unemployment rate in Poway was at 5.2 percent was in April 2009, after steadily rising for a year. In April 2008, the rate in Poway was a miniscule 2.8 percent. The numbers for the county and state improved last month as well, although they are still significantly higher than Poway’s. San Diego County’s unemployment rate fell almost a full percentage point from March, dropping from 9.6 percent to 8.7 percent. California’s rate in March was 10.5 percent, higher than the 7.7 percent for the …
And how Microsoft hopes to make it up to you with a $99 deal for a new Xbox.
Imagine going on vacation this fall and you are taking your brand-new Windows 8 laptop with you, in part to play movies on the long flight for your 3-year-old. The plane takes off, you slip in your toddler’s favorite Disney DVD, and...nothing. Nada. It won’t play. That brand-new laptop doesn’t have the software to play a DVD. What a terrible mistake! What an oversight! How could this have happened on a new machine with the latest version of Windows? On purpose. Microsoft has decided consumers don’t need software for watching DVDs, Blu-ray discs or broadcast TV in the version of Windows coming this fall, and so without purchasing an add-on pack from Microsoft or a third-party vendor you will not be able to watch a DVD like you can on your …
