Powegians Raise Thousands for Developmental Disabilities Institute

The Poway Unit of the Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary receives over $50,000 to benefit the Developmental Disabilities/Autism Discovery Institute.

The Poway Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary raised over $50,000 to benefit the Developmental Disabilities/Autism Discovery Institute.

The seventh annual event, titled “Tabletops & Tea,” was held at the Maderas Golf Club on Sunday and auctioned off 10 table tops with all proceeds benefiting the hospital. Attendees also heard from Aubyn Stahmer, Ph.D., a research scientist at UC San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital, and two people who deal with autism directly.

For information on how you can help, call Poway Unit President Susan Hering at 858-967-8055.

Rotarians at Work

Saturday morning, members of some 60 clubs in Rotary District 5340, which serves San Diego, Fallbrook and Bonsall and as far as Brawley and El Centro, rolled up their sleeves and participated in the annual "Rotarians at Work" day.  Improvement projects included clearing, planting, painting and repair. The Rotary Club of Poway spent the morning staining the benches and fences around Templars Hall in Old Poway Park, as well as painting the gazebo fences. Community Service Chairman Dan Brenner made sure everyone was supplied and entertained. "We combined with Spirit Day last year and felt we could get more accomplished by separating the two this year." More photos are on the Rotary Club of Poway Facebook page.

Rotarians are also working on last-minute details for the annual fundraising barbecue at Lake Poway on May 15. Among the plans are steak, chicken, live entertainment and auction items, including a hosted TV tour of Channel 7/39 and a chance to experience the "Jeff & Jer Showgram" live in the KYXY radio studios. For ticket information, visit Powayrotary.org.

Bark at the Park

This year the Kiwanis Club of Poway Foundation and Poway News Chieftain combine to provide an afternoon of free demonstrations, pet vendor booths, contests for participants and their pets, plus "hot" dogs and hamburgers. Bark at the Park is Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Poway Dog Park. No charge to get in. There is a flat $10 fee to participate in the contests.
