Poway Gives Back: Singing for Rotary, Recycling & Counting the Homeless

Save the date for Poway's Winter Festival, recycle your old electronic equipment and help count the homeless in San Diego County.

By Bill Stoudenmire

The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps enjoyed their annual visit from the Poway High School Die Lieder Singers, under the direction of Choral Director Nancy Gray, at it's regular lunch meeting at the Poway Brigantine Restaurant last Wednesday.

The singers performed their usual excellent program of holiday favorites to everyone's delight. The Club is a long-time supporter of Poway High music programs.

Winter Wonderland

It only snows once a year in Poway, and it's coming January 10th and 11th. Poway's Winter Festival will feature a snow hill for sledding and a synthetic ice rink for skating, all in Community Park.

There will be food suitable for winter available, including s'mores. Lights will twinkle and music will fill the air.

The event is free and you won't need snow tires or chains to get there. Hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. For details call 858-668-4671.

Recycle and Give Back

Out with the old to make room for the new electronics you get from Techno-Santa this year. There are two opportunities in the new year for you to drop off your no longer working or wanted electronics, small appliances and household batteries.

First is a fundraiser for the Poway High School Robotics Team on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 15500 Espola Road. It's being held in the north parking lot. You can also get documents shredded for $5 a box.

Then, Valley Elementary is having a free e-waste recycling event on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the school at 13000 Bowron. They are not accepting large appliances, batteries or TV's with broken screens. Proceeds will benefit the school's 5th grade class.

We All Count

That's what the Regional Task Force on the Homeless is calling it's annual census of homeless families and individuals in San Diego County. It's being done in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Some 800 volunteers are needed to serve as enumerators on Friday, Jan. 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., counting homeless people throughout the county. Additionally, 200 surveyors are needed on Jan. 24, 25 and 26 to help interview these homeless people.

The idea is to help families, veterans and individuals get off the street. Data from the count will help the community qualify for funding to address homelessness.
