Poway Gives Back: Poway Days Parade Saved, Red Shoes & Backyard Produce

By Bill Stoudenmire

POWAY ROTARY SAVES THE PARADE!

It was looking as if, after 48 years, the annual Poway Days Parade was not going to happen this September after parade Chair Sabrina Butler stepped down to focus on her growing children and no one else stepped up. It's official! The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps will host the 49th annual Poway Parade. Past club President and Poway attorney Pauline Getz will Chair the event. This year's parade theme is, “I Love a FIT Poway”. In keeping with the theme, a 5K run through Poway will precede the parade. Details are being worked out as I write this. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the Poway-Scripps Rotary Club has a new president. He is long-time club member and owner of Computer Clinic in Rancho Penasquitos, Dan Brenner. This will be Dan's second term as president, having served in 2005. Hopefully, he'll get it right this time.

The annual demotion dinner for outgoing two-term President Alan Noblitt was last Wednesday at Yanni's Bistro. It's always fun to get together for swallowship and friendly humiliation. The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps meets Wednesdays at noon at the Brigantine in Poway. Visit us on Facebook.

RED SHOE DAY

We mentioned it a couple of weeks ago, but it's worth reminding you that Red Shoe Day is this Thursday, June 27. When strange people come up to your car carrying red shoes and wanting money, it's all for a good cause. Your donations are in support of Ronald McDonald House.

I lost a grandson this year and experienced first-hand the good work Ronald McDonald House does while my son and daughter-in-law were able to focus on their son across the street at Rady. Among the volunteers, the Kiwanis Club of Poway will be at Pomerado and Twin Peaks between 7 and 10 a.m. dodging traffic with only the red shoes to protect them.

BACK YARD PRODUCE

If it's the last Thursday of June, it must be time to donate. Don't let your backyard-grown fruits and vegetables go bad. Donate them to Backyard Produce so Poway families in need can benefit. There are two locations ready for you this Thursday between 8:30 a.m and 2 p.m.:

  • The Connection Church at 14047 Twin Peaks Rd.
  • Seven Oaks Community Center at 16789 Bernardo Oaks Dr., Rancho Bernardo

Then, Friends and Family Community Connection will get it distributed. Don't have time to harvest yourself. Tree-picking teams can do it for you. Email jradatz@att.net.
