Poway Days: Volunteers Needed to Pack 200,000 Meals for Needy

The food-packing event will take place Saturday.

For Powegians looking to make a hearty contribution during the Poway Days festivities, stop by on Saturday.

The Friends & Family Community Connection—a local nonprofit with a goal of providing meals and drinking water to needy families around the world—will host a food-packing event and plans to pack at least 200,000 meals for families in Tanzania.

The event will be the 40th event in Poway, and volunteer coordinator Tina Socha is hopeful that least 1,200 volunteers will stop by.

“We’ll pack non-perishable food for families in need in Tanzania,” said Socha, who noted FFCC also has a center in the country. “These are families that have lost everything.”

Socha said 60 percent of the people who will benefit from these food packages are 16 or younger because older adults have been “hit so hard by AIDS and other diseases.”

The food-packing event will begin immediately after the Always Positive in Poway Parade (which begins at 9 a.m.) at the Walmart parking lot. To sign up, visit FFCCSD.org.

Monetary donations will also be accepted. According to Socha, $20 can provide 80 meals to those in need in the communities the organization serves.
