  • Why go: Local actor Paul David Halem wrote Life Cycles, about the different stages of everyone's existence. Continues through June 26.

  • Why go: The swim school joins waterparks and pools on four continents in a Guinness World Record attempt to create “the World's Largest Swimming Lesson.” Fun, yes, but serious too: Organizers hope the event builds awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim.

RAMONA

  • Why go: The Larry Carlton Trio perform Friday and Collin Raye follows on Saturday, with opening act West Coast Bandits.

  • Where/when: , 369 Main St, Ramona, 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • Why go: The boutique offers raffle prizes and refreshments to celebrate throwing open its doors.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER OUT

  • Where/when: Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, 10 a.m. Friday.
  • Why go: The San Diego County Fair kicks off with an opening ceremony and all the attractions you could hope for, from bungee jumping to monster trucks and displays of prize animals. Rocker Pat Benatar plays the opening concert, followed on Saturday by current chart-toppers Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae.
  • Price: $7-$13, with discounts available.
