City, Volunteers to Host an 'Old Fashioned Fourth of July'

The event at Old Poway Park will bring a turn-of-the-century flavor to the day.

YMCA GIVES BACK

The Rancho Family YMCA will recognize its volunteers—who make projects possible when they give their time, talents and resources—on Monday at the Hilltop Recreational Center in San Diego. Volunteers will receive awards at the event, which will take place from 6-7:15 p.m. If you need more information or want to volunteer at the "Y", call the volunteer coordinator at 858-484-8788, ext. 317.

HANDBAGS 4 HOPE

Add to your handbag collection and help raise funds for Operation for HOPE. The nonprofit raises public awareness about domestic violence and provides options to those in need. The silent auction will begin online prior to the charity fundraiser, which will take place at a private residence from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. BABY BOTTLE DRIVE

Life Choices Pregnancy Center is hosting a baby bottle drive to help raise funds for its programs. The nonprofit organization helps women with unplanned pregnancies, is encouraging local churches, community groups and youth organizations to contribute donations by filling baby bottles with change, cash or checks. Life Choices, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, will provide the baby bottles.

FEEDING THE HOMELESS ON THE 4TH

Friends and Family Community Connection will serve food to the homeless on Monday, July 4 at the San Diego Downtown Salvation Army. The group will meet at the Downtown Center at 6 p.m. FFCC needs more volunteers to prep and serve. They also need hairnets for this and future events. OLD FASHIONED 4TH

The city of Poway and volunteers from the Old Poway Park Action Committee are putting on an Old Fashioned Fourth of July in Old Poway Park on Monday, July 4 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., bringing a turn-of-the-century flavor to the day. Admission is free for all ages. Live patriotic entertainment, train rides, arts and crafts and face-painting for the kids, old fashioned games, mock gunfights and train robbery reenactments and, of course, picnic-style food for sale. Afterward, the annual fireworks show at Poway High School will fill the air beginning at 9 p.m. Gates open at 7 at the school and admission there is $2.

SOROPTIMISTS INSTALL NEW PREZ

Soroptimist International of Poway installed its new board of directors Sunday night. The chapter, which also celebrated its 40th anniversary in the city of Poway, welcomed Idelma Ozarski as the president, Linda England as president-elect, Dena Caruna-Carter as vice president, Pat Schultz as treasurer, Tanya Lewis as secretary, and April Mitchell as director. Marita Harmony will serve as the chapter's past president. Soroptimist International is an organization that focuses on improving the lives of women. There are about 95,000 members worldwide and 30 in Poway.
