14-Year-Old Football Star Accepts College Scholarship

Poway resident Tate Martell has sports media buzzing after scholarship offer from the University of Washington.

If Poway teen Tate Martell is asked on the first day of school what he did this summer, his answer will probably stand out from the other eighth graders. How many others can say they accepted a football scholarship from a Pac-12 university?

Martell’s father, Al, confirmed this week that Tate has accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Washington, even though he won’t be able to sign a letter of intent until February 2017.

A private coach working with Martell has described the prodigy as a clone of Fran Tarkenton and Brett Favre, and said Huskies Coach Steve Sarkisian “was just blown back by his ability,” according to The Seattle Times.

While Martell has decided where he’s going to college, his high school plans are reportedly still not clear, although he would look good in a Titan uniform.

For more on Martell read the report on U-T San Diego, The Seattle Times’ Husky Football Blog, and ESPN’s college football page.
