Chargers Home Opener May Be Blacked Out

The San Diego Chargers are calling this Sunday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans White Hot Sunday, encouraging fans to wear white to Qualcomm Stadium to match the all-white uniforms the team will be wearing.

Players and Chargers officials are hoping the enthusiasm in the stands will carry onto the field, getting the players “charged up” as they take on the 0-1 Titans.

Fans that can’t make it to the game may not get to see White Hot Sunday live on TV, as “several thousand” tickets remain unsold, which could trigger a dreaded blackout of local coverage, according to U-T San Diego.

The team has until 1:25 p.m. Thursday to sell enough tickets to avoid a blackout, which would leave Charger fans throughout Southern California without a way to see the game live on TV.

Sunday’s game will also feature a pre-game ceremony retiring the number 55 in honor of Junior Seau. Sunday’s game will be the first regular-season home game since Seau’s death.

Last year two games were blacked out, against the Cardinals and Dolphins.

The Chargers have started the season 1-0, beating the hated Oakland Raiders on Sunday 22-14.
