Poway Wrestlers Now Prepare for Masters Meet

After easily claiming yet another San Diego Section Division I championship, the Titans hope to have a big contingent qualify for state.

As usual, the Poway High wrestling team made sure the only close battle was for second place at last Saturday's San Diego CIF Division I championsip meet.

The Titans claimed an amazing 11 of 14 weight classes in winning their 25th straight title and 29th in the last 30 years.

Poway totaled 359.5 points, nearly double the count of runner-up Rancho Buena Vista, which finished with 182.5 points. Vista was third at 173.5, followed by Escondido  with 158 points.

Poway's division champions were sophomore Gabe Faller at 114 pounds, junior Josh Miranda at 121, senior Chad Gregory at 127, senior Justin Chua at 132, junior Jesse Taylor at 137, junior Josh Egli at 142, senior Bryant Heagney at 147, senior Maudin Latifi at 154, senior Henry Donahue at 162, senior Austin Crider at 173 and senior Porif Sosa at 217. Junior Kelly Simmons made the heavyweight final but lost. Gregory, Taylor, Latifi and Sosa won their championship matches on pins.

The two-day Masters meet, involving all divisions in the county, will be held Friday and Saturday at Canyon Crest Academy, with the top three finishers in each weight class qualifying for the state meet in Bakersfield the following weekend.

With a strong showing at Masters, Poway should be in the running for its fifth state wrestling championship.
