Farmers Insurance Open Continues Sunday After Full Day Delay

Play will continue at Torrey Pines Golf Course at 7 a.m. and Saturday tickets will be honored on Sunday.

The Farmers Insurance Open lost nearly a full day of play Saturday at Torrey Pines Golf Course due to heavy fog. The tournament will need to push back at least some of the final round from Sunday into Monday.

After a three hour delay, two groups totaling six players teed off and one group finished their first hole on Saturday before play was delayed again. The PGA suspended the day at 4 p.m.

The PGA noted that there has not been a TOUR delay since 2011. The last suspension of play was in 2005.

Billy Horschel said he would get a light workout in and just relax for the rest of the day.

“I thought about going to hit balls, but I'm not going to hit any balls.  You know, the swing feels good.  There is no need for me to go and hit balls.  I could tinker a little too much, and get too much in my own way,” Horschel said.

At the end of Friday, Tiger Woods sat on the leader board ahead of Horschel, who is at -9. There is a group of six other golfers who sit at -8. Nick Watney leads a group of six other golfers at -7.

Brad Fritsch said he passed the day hanging out in front of a large anxious crowd.

“They're just watching us hanging out and play weird games on the putting green and do all kinds of weird stuff.  So I feel bad for them, you know?  A lot of them have been here since early morning.  So they're here to see us play.  Hopefully, we can fit in a lot of golf tomorrow,” Fritsch said.

Casey Wittenberge said the suspension throws off his rhythm of play a little.

“You're used to playing golf every day, so to kind of have a dead day here in the middle of your four tournament rounds is a little different,” he said. “But everybody's dealing with the same thing, so I'm sure we'll try to do our best out here tomorrow to play some good golf.”

PGA tourament director Mark Russell is hopeful play will start again early Sunday.

"So we'll be back here in position at 7:00 in the morning, and we're going to play golf all day until dark, and then when it gets dark, we'll suspend play, and we'll come back Monday morning and finish the championship if the weather cooperates. That is the plan," Russell said.

Tickets for Saturday (hospitality badges included) will be valid for general grounds entry on Sunday. Note that while Saturday hospitality badge holders will be granted general admission on Sunday, only Sunday hospitality badge holders will be allowed entry into the hospitality venues on Sunday.

On Monday, tickets from any day of the tournament will be valid for general admission. General entry tickets for Monday can be purchased at FarmersInsuranceOpen.com.
