CIF Baseball: Poway Gets by Vista, to Face RB Friday
No. 5 Titans earn a rematch with rival Rancho Bernardo, which blanked Carlsbad.
Poway (23-8), which needed to win a play-in game as the No. 5 seed in the Division I baseball playoffs, upset No. 4 Vista on Wednesday behind the pitching of Chad Etchison, who tossed a five-hitter and struck out six in improving his record to 7-0. Derek Hasenbeck's two-run double keyed a four-run seventh inning for the Titans that broke open what had been a 1-0 game.
The Titans now advance to Friday's second round, where they will host Palomar League rival and top-seeded Rancho Bernardo at 3:30 p.m.
Andrew Daniel had a triple, home run and five runs batted in and starter David Gabel allowed just two hits over six innings as Rancho Bernardo blanked Carlsbad 14-0 in an opening round game.
