BYU Cougars Slotted for 2015 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego

Brigham Young University will be invited back to the Poinsettia Bowl in 2015 if the Cougars win at least six games.

Defending champion Brigham Young University will be invited back to the Poinsettia Bowl in 2015 if the Cougars win at least six games, the San Diego Bowl Game Association announced Wednesday.

BYU, which defeated San Diego State 23-6 in the contest last season, would appear in the game for the second time. The Cougars have appeared in the other bowl game played at Qualcomm Stadium, the Holiday Bowl, 11 times.

"We have a long-standing relationship with (BYU) and its loyal fans," said bowl game association Executive Director Bruce Binkowski. "Looking down the road and knowing they will be back in San Diego is a win-win for everyone."

The Poinsettia Bowl traditionally locks in its at-large entrant a few years in advance. Army is scheduled to appear this season, if eligible.

BYU, as an independent, needs advance bowl slots since most of them are taken up by conferences.

"We had a fantastic experience at the Poinsettia Bowl in December and are excited to return in 2015," said Tom Holmoe, BYU's athletic director. "San Diego has hosted some of the great football moments in our program's history and I'm excited for our large fan base in Southern California to have other opportunities to see us play in person."

Where the Poinsettia Bowl will draw an opponent is uncertain. Bowl officials are negotiating a contract extension with the Mountain West.
