Zoo Names Poway High Grad as 'Young Conservation Advocate'

The San Diego Zoo Global will award Nathan Tallman and others for their efforts on Aug. 11.

A Poway High graduate will be given the "Young Conservation Advocate" award by the San Diego Zoo Global, it was announced Wednesday.

Nathan Tallman, who developed a program for teaching middle school science students about the decline of amphibian populations, will receive the award alongside La Costa Canyon High School graduate Luca Banks and High Tech International senior Mason McGhee.

While longtime San Diego Zoo advocate Joan Embery and husband Duane Pillsbury will receive the top honor. The couple keeps 30 rare and endangered animals and 40 horses at their Lakeside ranch, where they host frequent outreach events. While Embery is the public face of the zoo, Pillsbury works behind the scenes.
