School Supply Drive Mixup Still Sends Donations to Poway Students

A donation meant for homeless children in the "Drive for Success" will end up helping other Poway students in need.

The Poway branch of California Coast Credit Union is not participating in a countywide school supply drive for homeless children, as had been previously announced, but is gathering materials for Midland Elementary School students.

Earlier this month, the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) announced that it had partnered with California Coast Credit Union to collect school supplies for thousands of homeless children. In the announcement, officials said the supplies could be dropped off at any branch. But when a local woman recently brought donations to the Poway location at 13616 Poway Rd., she was told the branch was not participating.

Marjorie Rice, manager of community relations for California Coast Credit Union, apologized for the mixup on Monday. An SDCOE spokeswoman said officials had not known the branch was not joining the "Drive for Success" when the announcement was made.

Instead, Rice said, the Poway branch is continuing a partnership with Midland Elementary School that includes a separate supply drive for that campus' students through Aug. 16.

About one-third of Midland's students are eligible for free or reduced price meals, compared to 13 percent of Poway Unified School District students overall.

The woman who stopped by the credit union branch with school supplies for homeless children was happy to be able to help Midland students instead.
