Poway Unified to Consider Boundary Changes for Turtleback, Chaparral Elementaries

The changes would require students to apply for transfers to stay in the same school if they are beyond the new boundaries.

Poway Unified officials have proposed changing the boundaries for four elementary schools, including Turtleback and Chaparral, to alter how students are spread among the campuses.

A first reading of a policy about the boundary changes is scheduled for Monday's 6 p.m. Board of Education meeting at the district office, 15250 Avenue of Science.

Students who live in areas that would switch to a different school would need to apply for an Intradistrict Transfer to remain at their current school of attendance. This also applies to students with siblings at the current school. The proposed changes, according to the board packet (maps are attached to this story):

  • Boundary between Chaparral and Painted Rock elementaries: "Students in the Summerfield development (SAAZ 5307501) and the Rancho Bernardo area (SAAZ 7117502), both of which are south of Pomerado Road and east of Rancho Bernardo Road, will be reassigned to Painted Rock Elementary School." Summerfield students will still feed to Twin Peaks Middle and Poway High. The RB area students will still feed to Bernardo Heights Middle and RB High.
    • Reason: Disproportionate enrollment between the two schools. Current boundaries allocate about 68 percent of residents to Chaparral. By the 2017-18 school year, that would drop to about 62 percent with the changes.
  • Boundary change for Turtleback and Monterey Ridge elementaries: "Students residing in the Bernardo Point and The Summit developments (SAAZ 8377606) will be reassigned to Turtleback Elementary School." These students will still feed to Oak Valley Middle and Del Norte High.
    • Reason: To provide priority attendance to the students from Community Facilities District No. 6, the CFD that helped fund Monterey Ridge facilities.

Also on the agenda:

  • Recognition of district spelling bee winners; Mesa Verde Middle's band; staff honors.
  • Presentation from Poway High and Westview Robotic Clubs and Cybersecurity Clubs.
