Poway Schools Bid Farewell to Retiring Teachers, Staff

Poway High School's seniors aren't the only ones saying goodbye to their Titan days this summer.

In addition to retiring Principal Scott Fisher, whose last official day will be June 28 after more than three decades in education, a number of other Poway educators are leaving, too. The district recently announced that Abraxas High Principal Ron Garrett has been chosen to replace Fisher, pending school board approval.

These are the names of others retiring this month or over the next several months:

  • Deborah Tait, Gardon Road Elementary (26 years of service)
  • Kathleen Nakagawa, Pomerado Elementary teacher (18 years)
  • David Awbry, Twin Peaks Middle Spanish teacher (27 years)
  • Mark Embrey, Poway High P.E. teacher (37 years)
  • Cynthia Dorr, Chaparral Elementary (34 years)
  • George Pantana, Abraxas High counselor (7 years)
Also retiring:
  • Sally Flournoy, assistant director of Learning Support Services (14 years)
  • Shirley Day, Learning Support Services teacher (28 years)
  • Bill Chiment, associate superintendent of Personnel Support Services (38 years)
  • Janet Speer, school nurse (24 years)
