Poway High Ranked No. 317 on Newsweek's 'Best High Schools' List

The news magazine used six factors to gauge how well 2,000 public schools prepare students for college.

Newsweek ranked Poway High School higher than four out of five of the best public schools in a new evaluation of how well 2,000 campuses prepare their students for college.

Poway High came in at No. 317, behind fellow Poway Unified schools Westview (150) and Rancho Bernardo High (310) but above Mount Carmel (488). (The rankings are based in part on 2011 graduation rates, but Del Norte High did not graduate its first class until 2012.)

The rankings include six weighted factors: graduation rate, college acceptance rate and number of AP/IB tests taken per student—all worth 25 percent; average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB scores—worth 10 percent; and the percentage of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB course, worth 5 percent.
