Photos: Seniors Honored for Decades of Giving Back to Children

Many seniors were honored recently for years of volunteer hours helping children learn to read in the Seniors Helping Our Kids program.

A long-running reading program that partners local seniors with children in the recently celebrated a milestone: the first round of volunteers who have been giving back for 20 years.

The announcement:

On May 3, members of Seniors Helping Our Kids / OASIS Tutoring (SHOK/OASIS) gathered at to honor the program's five-year, 10-year, 15-year, and 20-year volunteers. SHOK/OASIS members volunteer in the Poway Unified schools.

Westwood Elementary Principal Mike Mosgrove and County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price’s representative Steven Hadley assisted program director Jane Radatz in presenting the awards. Each expressed his appreciation for the contribution made by the volunteers.

  • Five-year awards were presented to Terry Cohler, Lois Goodman, Joe Heatherman, Karin Hillebrecht, Ginny Johnston, Brian Kratz, Bruce McCoy, Audrey Mueller, Dan Norman, Lola Onstad, Pat Peckham and Carolyn Primo.
  • 10-year awards were presented to Elliot Epner, Doris Goldstein, Bettie Jeli and Shirley Locke.
  • 15-year awards were presented to Joyce Gage, Grace Igasaki, Jane Levin and Carolyn Sikes.
  • 20-year awards were presented to Esther Bloom, Jack Bloom, and Bob Stevens.


At the conclusion of the program, the volunteers presented program director Jane Radatz a necklace with a pendant in the shape of a starfish, the symbol of the SHOK/OASIS program, to thank her for all she does for the program.
