Midland Students Show Off Their Spelling Talents

A tradition is started with the first annual spelling bee at Midland Elementary.

Just as was on her way to winning the national spelling bee finals this week, students at gathered to watch a group of their classmates compete in their own spelling bee.

Hosted by the Midland Educational Foundation and sponsored by TurnAround Schools, Midland students in the second through fifth grades stood on stage Wednesday morning for the school’s first annual spelling bee, judged by Poway Federation of Teachers President Candy Smiley and Poway Patch Editor Tom Roebuck.

All of the contestants were already winners and were awarded medals for qualifying for the spelling bee, with first-place winners getting a Kindle Fire.

Back in 2005, Anurag Kashyap of won the national spelling bee. With more hard work, perhaps Poway will have another champion soon!
