Jen Strachan Puts Heart and Soul into Event Honoring Slain Teen

Prime Poway Woman No. 2 is chairwoman of Finish Chelsea's Run 5K race in Balboa Park.

Jen Strachan has made a long-term investment in today’s youth.

The Bernardo Heights Middle School teacher has taught for 13 years. She’s also the school’s co-ASB director and the chair of Finish Chelsea’s Run, a 5-kilometer  event Saturday honoring slain teen Chelsea King.

Strachan, who grew up in Poway, said she has put her “heart and soul into helping Chelsea’s family and their foundation create positive change and engage our community.”

But that’s not all. Strachan also is involved in Turtleback Elementary’s foundation, where her son attends and is a member of the “Best Buddies” program at BHMS.

She said her inspiration comes from her mom and children.

“My mom is a blessing to all that encounter her. She is one that you can depend on—no matter what it is you need, she is there,” she said.

“Brady and Cooper, our two sons, [are] what I am most proud of as well as my biggest accomplishment. To see them grow and change each day is a blessing. They help me to be a better person, smile, and make positive changes every day so that they hopefully can continue to grow up in a safe and kind world.”

On top of that, Strachan can be seen teaching Jazzercise at 5:30 a.m. weekly in Poway.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

“We all should acknowledge one another daily—for the little and big things. There are thousands of people every day who choose to make a difference, not because they need a thank you but because they want to. Women past and present have impacted the world we live in; we should be thankful for each movement, each voice and each action that was made and heard. This is an opportunity to acknowledge and say thank you to those women.”
