Hundreds of Students to Descend on San Diego

TEDxYouth@SanDIego is non-profit, independently organized event led by area business leaders and educators who partner with a 45-student organizing team.

Canyon Crest Academy will host more than 400 students from high schools throughout San Diego County on Sunday Nov. 24 as part of the TEDxYouth@SanDiego.

Titled Unlimited, the event is billed as a place to share ideas with experts. Twenty-five speakers, considered big thinkers and doers who push the boundaries of science, art, technology, environment and humanity are scheduled to take part, organizers wrote in a news release.

They include 16-year-old Intel International Science and Engineering Fair winner Jack Andraka, Princeton junior Eden Full who was recently named on the Forbes 30 under 30 list, and Shane Koyczan, a world-renowned spoken word artist, organizers said.

A live video stream will be accessible to the public starting at 8:30 a.m. as of Nov. 24. View last year’s video to get an idea of what the event is about, organizers said.

"I have been a part of the TEDxYouth@SanDiego experience for the past two years, and seeing the positive impact it has on my peers is what makes it worthwhile,” Jason Phillips, student organizing committee member at Canyon Crest Academy through the news release. “This event has allowed students to expand their minds to see new possibilities and inspired me to pursue my dreams with a new found passion and dedication.“

The full speaker lineup is available at the program’s website. tedxyouthsandiego.com.

“It’s extraordinary to see the passion and excitement from San Diego’s amazing young people as they engage world-renowned thought leaders and discuss big ideas,” said Sonia Rhodes, executive producer, curator and licensee of TEDxYouth@SanDiego. “There’s nothing quite like sharing a spark of possibility with eager and engaged students. I’m more convinced than ever that the future is bright with these kids leading the way.”

Students will enjoy more than 25 speakers, half of whom are under the age of 25, hands-on salons including the Mars Curiosity Rover team and an exploration of genomics along with various experiences inspired by Soul Pancake including a huge ball pit and a conversation couch, writing areas to share thoughts and ideas, meditation with Jeffrey Zlotnik, photo opportunities with Outside the Lens, and tai chi with Matt Wolf. The event will also feature more than 100 artists from Canyon Crest Academy including dancers, musicians and vocalists who centered their collective piece around the theme UNLIMITED.
