Got Your Eye on Some Art?

Poway High School is having an open art gallery on May 10.

Have a deep appreciation for all-things art? Then is where you need to be on May 10.

The school is having their fifth annual event this Thursday and it’s a one-of-a-kind experience for students and guests alike. Adjacent classrooms are set up as interactive galleries, with displayed art and demonstrations of various mediums of art. Each room will contain its own medium.

“Some of the students will be demonstrating how they make the artwork,” said Poway High photography teacher and chair of the art department Daniel Harris. “In the photography room, there will be a dark room set up and students in there making prints and explaining how the process works; there will be students in the studio doing a studio shoot; visual media students will be doing a mock up of a shoot and parents can come watch that; there will be students painting; and some students doing ceramic work.”

To complement the unique and beautiful artwork of the students, Eye on Art will have live jazz, performed by Poway High School bad Tough Times Trio, and elevated eats, like sushi platters and shrimp cocktail, provided by the PTSA.

“(The band) is really quite phenomenal,” Harris said. “And the PTSA is doing a wonderful job of providing hors d’oeuvres.”

Harris also said that this year’s artsy event is bringing a new element to the table—floral design. The class, which is only a year in at the school, is part of Poway High’s agriculture program as well as part of the art program.

“Students have taken work from the Museum of Art at Balboa Park and mirrored it,” Harris said. “There will be interpreted pieces of that through floral design.”

Eye on Art is a fun night for the kids, who Harris said get to experience a gallery opening, since most of them have never been to a gallery. But it’s also good times for the community.

“We want to encourage the community to come,” Harris said. “It’s a celebration of the artwork; the culmination of the work they’ve done all year.”

Ready to give your eyes some art to feast on? Visit Poway High School on May 10 at 7 p.m. for music, food and lots of art. Admission is free, but bring some cash. “We’re very lucky at Poway High School,” Harris said. ”Our district and community support the arts program so much."
