El Camino Trips the Titans 9-7 with Help of Doubtful Umpire Call at Poway Field

Runs scored in the fourth inning that observers thought should have been negated by third out.

Poway High School was upset by visiting El Camino 9-7 Friday afternoon in a makeup game for one rained out Tuesday. The Titans gave up three runs in the first inning but came back to tie the Oceanside squad 3-3 in the second behind back-to-back first-pitch home runs by Justin McSorley and Kevin Trinh.

The Titans fought back again from a 6-3 deficit in the fourth to tie it again 6-6—after an umpire’s call that had spectators scratching their head.  A  Poway left fielder made an unexpected catch, and most observers thought the Wildcat on third ran home without tagging up.  But an umpire said the El Camino score was legal, didn’t call an out, and two doubtful runs were on the board.

After going ahead 7-6 in the sixth inning of the North County Tournament game, El Camino came back to score one in the secenth and a pair in the eighth, and a Wildcat double play closed the game. Coach Bob Parry’s Titans—ranked fifth in the county at the start of the week—fell to 4-3 for the year, while Joe Gonzales’ Wildcats won their second game of the season against six losses.
