A five-week "Drive for Success" is underway to collect school supplies for the thousands of homeless children in San Diego County, including in the Poway Unified School District.

About 17,400 school-aged children in San Diego County were considered homeless during the 2011-12 school year, including more than 2,300 in North County school districts such as PUSD.

The school supply drive, a partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education, businesses and local agencies, aims to collect enough materials for 4,500 homeless children by Aug. 9.

“These students are enduring challenges that many of us have not had to face,” Randy Ward, San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, said in a statement. “The Drive for Success donation drive will ensure these students have the supplies they need to start the school year ready for classes and ready to build a better future.”

  • Backpacks
  • Binders
  • Spiral notebooks
  • Binder paper
  • Calculators
