Abraxas High Principal Retiring; PUSD Recommends Replacement

The Poway Unified School District is recommending that Mt. Carmel Assistant Principal Ron Garrett replace retiring Abraxas Principal Rudy Casciato.

With the upcoming retirement of Principal Rudy Casciato, the Poway Unified School District has announced that Assistant Principal Ron Garrett is being recommended for the position.

The PUSD board will be asked to ratify the selection of Garrett as the next principal at Abraxas at its next meeting on May 21. Garrett has been serving as assistant principal at Mt. Carmel since 2002.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the entire Abraxas community to continue the mission of college and career readiness toward the success of all our students,” Garrett said in a statement.

Garrett was a science teacher at from 1993 to 2000, as well as a Poway High School Foundation board member and a member of the governance body. In 1999-2000, he earned National Board Certification in Science from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

At Mt. Carmel, Garrett led the Grade Level Team in developing academic coaching to help students set goals and improve their academic progress. He also developed an Intervention Team to assist at-risk students using data-based interventions and one-to-one mentors.

“Ron’s leadership with staff and students and his knowledge of successful programs and practices to enhance student college and career skills makes him the perfect leader to support the vision of Abraxas High School. He is an outstanding educator and advocate for each student’s success,” PUSD Superintendent John Collins said in a statement.

Garrett’s educational background includes a bachelor of science degree in geology from State University of New York at Stony Brook, post graduate work in school administration at the University of Houston, and a master of science degree and administration credential from National University, San Diego.

Garrett lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with his wife Jodi and their two children.
