Patch Readers Pick Maderas Golf Club for Best Course in Poway Area

Padres and Chargers players routinely roam 88-acre course at semiprivate club in rolling hills.

People who play Maderas Golf Club might see Padres or Chargers on the 88-acre course on rolling hills.  But that’s not the only reason the semi-private course is Poway Patch’s winner of this week’s Readers’ Choice award.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on is the friendliness of our staff and customer service,” said Michael Flickinger, the club’s director of operations.

He said the club attracted 30,000 golfers in 2011—mainly from San Diego County but also from Canada and Mexico—drawn for its top ratings in the county Zagat Survey and other rankings of its “beautiful natural canyon” setting.

The club, with a large clubhouse and banquet facility, hosts benefit tournaments every year, including events for the Toby Wells Foundation, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Wounded Warriors groups, Flickinger said Friday.

Professionals play the course, too, including former PGA Tour member Chris Mayson, the Maderas director of instruction.

But even rookies are welcomed, and Flickinger said Taylor Made will offer a fitting event Sunday, April 15, where golfers can find out which clubs are best for them.

Runner-ups for Readers’ Choice award in best golf courses were a tie—Stoneridge Country Club and The Vineyard.

Next week’s poll: Best Breakfast Spot.
