PUSD Recognizes Outstanding Students, Employees and Volunteers

The School Board recognized numerous individuals and departments for their various outstanding work in the district, including RB High's pole vault coach of 22 years.

It was a night of recognition at the Poway Unified School District Board meeting Monday evening.

More than 30 individuals, some of which were students, and about three programs or departments were recognized Feb. 11 for various achievements or services provided to the district.

Seven Poway High School students (including one former) were approved for the California State Future Farmers of America (FFA) Degree:

  • Garrett Barton (Junior)
  • Adriana Chabot (Junior)
  • Scott Kapitzke (Junior)
  • Lizzie Johnson (Senior)
  • Hunter Lane (Senior)
  • Jessica Wadleigh (Senior)
  • Zoe South (2012 graduate)

Three Turtleback Elementary students received the Service Above Self Award:

  • Julia Bennett
  • Braeden Bourne
  • Katelyn Nickerson

Two Poway High students competed at the DECA conference:

  • Kenneth Farrell (finalist in Role Play 2 event)
  • Mikeala Hess (placed in Marketing Management Role Play event)

2013 National High School Pole Vault Coach of the Year:

  • RB High's Tom Martin (has taught at RB High for 22 years)

Everyday Heroes, which honors classified employees who demonstrate excellence in work performance, school and community involvement, and leadership and commitment to both the district and students:

Tom Martin is an amazing coach and person. He not only is able to get the best out of students in terms of vaulting, but also is instrumental in their evolution into the people they become. He teaches respect, good sportsmanship, discipline and so much more. This award is long overdue!
