President of Poway’s Democratic Club To Be Honored with Leadership Award

Mickey Foster has been president of the Poway Democratic Club since 2009, and will be honored with Vincent Andrade Leadership award for making a difference.

Mickey Foster gets a little uncomfortable at the mention of a date in April, and it has nothing to do with taxes.

Instead, the president of Poway’s Democratic Club is scheduled to be honored with the Vincent Andrade “Making a Difference” award—and he has mixed feelings about it.

“First of all, I’m honored and flattered that my fellow true-blue Democrats would [nominated me],” he said. “On the other hand, I feel a little uncomfortable about it because … I’m not seeking out recognition or an award; I want to be effective.”

Foster will be one of several honored during the 32nd annual Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt dinner hosted by the San Diego County Democratic Party on Saturday, April 14.

Fellow volunteer Pete Babich said they’re not sure exactly what Foster is being recognized for, though there isn’t any shortage of possibilities.

“The county party's executive board votes on award recipients, and they keep their process confidential,” Babich said, “But Mickey's work with the Poway Club, Democrats for Obama, Veterans for Peace, and the county party's Council of Clubs would more than qualify him for the award.”

The Poway Democratic Club began in 2005 with just 21 members and currently has 110. Foster said it’s not the membership numbers that have been most rewarding, but the quality work being done.

“We grow in such a way that, no matter how many members we have each year, I’ve seen us network, obtain information, pass it along and take action,” said Foster, president since 2009.

Babich says the annual recognition dinner usually boasts around 500 attendees ranging from elected officials, party members, and regular Joes who are “more than a reliable Democratic vote.”

The general reception begins at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on the Bay. Alex Rooker, vice chair of the California Democratic Party, will emcee the event and Christine Pelosi, an activist and video producer, is scheduled to speak.
