Poway Unemployment Creeps Up to 6.3 Percent

The state of California also saw a slight increase in unemployment with a recorded rate of 12.4 percent in July.

The unemployment rate in Poway increased slightly in July to 6.3 percent compared to 6.2 percent in June, the state Employment Development Department reported on Friday.

The county saw the same trend with an unemployment rate of 10.5 percent in July compared to 10.4 percent in June. Despite the increase, the unemployment rate remains lower than the 10.9 percent recorded in the same period in 2010.

Across the state, California’s jobless rate was 12.4 percent in July, up from 12.1 percent in June but down from 12.8 percent in July of last year, according to the EDD. The rate in the United States was 9.3 percent, the same as the previous month.

Total nonfarm employment of more than 1.2 million dropped by 6,000 jobs in San Diego County between June and July, led by a loss of 9,100 local education employees, according to EDD data.

By comparison, state and federal employment increased by a combined 1,900 jobs last month.

July was the second straight month in which the unemployment rate in the San Diego region increased, reversing a trend in which it had dropped in four of the previous five months, according to the EDD.

The numbers are not seasonally adjusted.
