Term Limits Committee Surpasses Signature Requirement

The initiative has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, but supporters will continue drive through Dec. 19 deadline.

With only a week and a half to go, Councilman ’s initiative to bring term limits to Poway reached an important milestone Wednesday, with 2,965 signatures gathered, well more than the 2,800 minimum required for the ballot.

Though they've reached the requirement, supporters hope to gather 3,300 signatures by the Dec. 19 deadline, which is 180 days from when Grosch filed the notice to circulate the petition, to ensure that the initiative gets on the November 2012 general election ballot.

“The reason we want more [signatures] is because some who have signed may not be registered, some may have signed twice, or their names and addresses might not [match] the official voter registered file,” Grosch said.

The proposed initiative states that no person shall serve more than two consecutive terms as mayor or council member. And to prevent an elected official from alternating between the positions, the initiative also states that no one may serve more than four consecutive terms as a member of the City Council, which comprises the mayor and council members.

The initiative counts any portion of a term served as one full term, regardless of the time in office.
