Poway Democratic Club to Host Its First City Council Candidate Forum

Club president Mickey Foster says he's expecting 200-plus people to attend the forum, which will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Poway Senior Center.

This month will mark a first for the Poway Democratic Club. On Thursday, Sept. 27, they’re hosting a City Council Candidate Forum―and club president Mickey Foster is expecting quite the crowd.

“The first ones are usually well attended,” said Foster, recalling past similar events. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we had 200-plus people.”

But it’s not the Democratic Club he’d credit for that success; instead, it’s the residents of Poway.

“The people of Poway seem to be actively engaged, and they want to be informed,” said Foster, club president since 2009. “And that’s a good thing.”

He says the event―which begins at 7 p.m. in the Bill Bond multi-purpose room at the ―will likely bring about discussion regarding several hot-button topics for Poway, from traffic density and commercial expansion to the cost of water and community development.

“I would have to think that the majority of residents in Poway like the open spaces and want to keep it that way,” said Foster, who also serves on the state executive board for the California Democratic Party and is a delegate for the 75th Assembly District.

Candidates Steve Vaus, Gary Vineyard, Jeff Mangum and incumbent Deputy Mayor Jim Cunningham all will be present during the forum, which will be moderated by the League of Women Voters.
