Those who purchase a memorial tile by May 15 will see it installed in time for Independence Day.

When Don Stonecipher joined the Navy in 1955, he took an oath to protect the freedoms of every United States citizen to the best of his ability―and he’s done everything to uphold that promise ever since.

“We all took an oath, and that never goes away,” Stonecipher said. “There are a lot of people who have sacrificed a lot of our country.”

As the president of the Veterans Committee, Stonecipher is one of several working to honor veterans of the past and present who have taken such an oath with a “Wall of Honor” tile display at .

An estimated 400 tiles have already been installed, and the Committee―consisting of members from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks Club, Navy Fleet Reserve, Military Officers Association of America, and the city of Poway―now have 100 more available.

The tiles come in sizes of 8 by 8 inches ($350) or 8 by 4 ($150) inches, and Stonecipher says those that have been placed so far offer a variety of messages. For his own, Stonecipher chose simply to list his name, military branch and years of service.

“We don’t dictate what you can say; it just has to be in good taste,” Stonecipher said, adding that politically charged sentiments aren’t accepted. “There are more things that you can say than you can’t.”

A tile order form is attached as a PDF, and those who purchase one by May 15 will see it installed by July 4. For more information, call Stonecipher at 858-964-8115 or Committee Member Christine Cunningham at 619-851-9216.
