County Recognizes Poway Resident for Volunteer Work

Poway's John Williams is one of 20 volunteers to be given the Volunteer of the Year award.

The outstanding community service contributions of 20 San Diego County residents were recognized by the County Supervisors as Volunteers of the Year on Wednesday morning.

The volunteers—including —collectively worked for a total of 4,834 hours this year for various departments countywide. Williams has volunteered more than 10,000 hours in over 10 years at the Friends of Poway Library Bookstore.

“Our dedicated volunteers are the heart of many of our programs and services. Their motivation is not about money, but about purpose,” said Chairman Bill Horn.  “The hours, and in many cases, years, that these volunteers have worked both behind-the-scenes and up front is a true service that benefits and touches diverse community groups.”

According to the County, the total time donated by these volunteers equals more than 45 years and more than $32 million was saved by county taxpayers last year because of the volunteer efforts of 29,951 people.
