Council to Discuss Possible Valle Verde Road Stop Signs After Pedestrian Dies

A local citizen's group says it has more than 300 signatures supporting the installment of stop signs.

Poway City Council members will discuss at their Tuesday meeting whether an analysis is needed to determine if stop signs should be placed at a intersection where a Poway pedestrian die

The discussion, initiated by Mayor Don Higginson, will be focused on whether the council should direct staff to conduct an "All-Way Stop Analysis" at the intersection of Valle Verde Road and Solera Way/Vinter Way after a Sept. 13 accident led to the death of a Poway woman.

According to the staff report, the city has received 53 items of correspondence requesting stop signs at the intersection, one requesting a roundabout, two requesting flashing lights and eight simply requesting that "something be done."

However, a local citizen's group that has been petitioning for the installment of stop signs at the intersection say they have more than 300 signatures supporting it.

Several dozen residents and their children are expected to attend the meeting to encourage the council to install the stop signs.

On , 36-year-old Sharlotte Kingston was struck by an out-of-control pickup truck as she walked through Valle Verde Road near Dorset Way. On , she was declared dead.

Other items on the City Council agenda include:

  • Staff will present the application of Perry Ford to demolish its existing sales office to construct a new 17,500-square-foot office. Staff will ask council members for direction on the proposal. Read Patch's story on the proposal . 
  • Council members will consider approving the relocation of the existing Toyota of Poway dealership on Poway Road to the southeast corner of the road near Midland Road. The proposal also includes an expansion that totals 9,000 square feet of building additions.
  • Council members will consider approving a Tentative Parcel Map that will divide 2.3-acres on Rock Road.
