Council Members to Consider More Funds for Arbolitos Lights Project

The lowest bid for the controversial project came in at more than the estimated cost.

The City Council will be asked Tuesday to allocate more funding for the Arbolitos lights project after the lowest bid exceeded the estimated cost.

After much discord among Powegians last year over the project and the for the project, council members will be asked to allocate enough money to cover the cost of a $781,645.50 bid from Fordyce Construction Inc. with an additional $110,000 "to cover expected legal expenses."

According to the staff report, the bids were more than the anticipated cost of $600,000 to $610,000. Council members will be asked to appropriate an additional $250,000 from the Park Development Fund and $60,000 from the General Fund for the project, with the cost being offset by donations from the Poway Youth Soccer League.

The $110,000 from the General Fund will be applied to the entire $360,000 cost of the legal battle against Poway residents who claimed the installation of lights could impact the threatened California species gnatcatchers. A San Diego Superior Court .
