A hiker on the Mt. Woodson Trail near Lake Poway died Thursday morning from a possible heart attack, according to authorities.

The male hiker was with a group more than three-quarters up the hill when the 911 call was made at 11:09 a.m., said Kevin Hitchcock of the Poway Fire Department. Members of the hiking party performed CPR on the stricken hiker as a Cal Fire helicopter was dispatched to locate the group.

The helicopter crew quickly spotted the hikers and picked up a paramedic, who was dropped off at the scene to take over CPR. A second Cal Fire helicopter with a hoist was also called in, Hitchcock said.

When the paramedic arrived, CPR had been ongoing for about 40 minutes. Despite aggressive efforts to save the hiker’s life, his death was pronounced at the scene.
