Poway Man, Daughter Suffer Major Injuries in Head-On Crash
The crash killed a 21-year-old man who might have been drunk and speeding when he hit the Poway vehicle.
A 41-year-old Poway man and his 9-year-old daughter had to be extricated from their Jeep Wrangler after a man driving up to 100 mph crashed into them head-on Saturday night in Lakeside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man and his daughter were taken to hospitals with major, non-life threatening injuries, and the other driver, 21-year-old Harold Oliver Wise IV of Lakeside, was killed.
Witnesses said Wise was going 80 to 100 mph eastbound on Lake Jennings Park Road, north of El Monte Road, when his 2006 Nissan Altima crossed over into westbound traffic and hit the Poway vehicle head-on, according to a CHP news release.
CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein told Patch Wise had on a wristband from CountryFest, a concert held Saturday at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds, and is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Wise was pronounced dead at the scene "without resuscitative efforts due to obvious fatal trauma," according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
The Poway man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, his daughter to Rady Children's Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
