The Suburban had been in a far right lane of I-15 traveling about 60 mph, the spokesman said.

This began a six-vehicle pileup that also left one motorist with a minor injury, the spokesman said.

Shea was taken to Pomerado Hospital, where he died just after 11 p.m. "despite aggressive efforts," according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
