Holiday Drunken Driving Arrests Down in County, State

About half the number of arrests of last year's total had been made by sunrise Wednesday.

California Highway Patrol officers in San Diego County arrested 16 suspected drunken drivers by sunrise today, compared to 35 in the same Fourth of July reporting period last year, CHP officials said Thursday.

Statewide, CHP officers made 220 suspected drunken driving arrests on freeways and in unincorporated areas between 6:01 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, less than half the 443 arrests made in the same time period in 2011, the CHP reported.

No fatalities were reported by law enforcement agencies during the holiday period this year in San Diego County. One fatality was reported during the same time period last year, the CHP said.

Statewide two vehicle occupants were killed this year, compared to one fatality reported in 2011, CHP officials said.
