Motorists' Fix-It Tickets in Poway Will Cost You an Extra $17

Residents can get the tickets signed for free by San Diego police or California Highway Patrol.

Fix-it tickets are never fun, but did you know they can be cheaper if you get them signed outside of Poway?

The San Diego Sheriff's Department Poway station will sign off motorists’ fix-it tickets, Sgt. Ward said, but they charge $17 to do so — on top of the $25 court fee you must pay when you mail your ticket in.

According to Section 26746.1 of the California Government Code, the fee — assessed by the sheriff or marshal — is deposited in a special fund in the country treasury and used to "supplement the costs of the depositor for the implementation, maintenance, and purchase of auxiliary equipment and furnishings for automated systems or other non-automated operational equipment and furnishings deemed necessary by the sheriff’s civil division or marshal."

But for residents who want to leave the $17 in their wallets, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) will sign off your tickets — if you've corrected the violation — for free.

Powegians can visit the Rancho Peñasquitos SDPD office at 13396 Salmon River Road Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for free signing. Call the station at 858-538-8000 with any questions.

Fix-it tickets can also be signed by CHP officers — if you see one pulled over, wait for them to finish their write-up and then ask to sign.

If you don't mind shelling out the extra dough for a fix-it ticket at the Poway Sheriff's station (13100 Bowron Rd.), make sure you bring either cash or a check, as credit and debit cards are not accepted.

What do you think of the $17 signing fee? Would you rather pay the cash for the convenience of staying in town, or would you travel to Rancho Peñasquitos for a free sign-off? Tell us in the comments below!
