Crime Rates in Poway Drop by 27 Percent

A SANDAG report shows violent and property crimes have dropped in the city.

Crime rates in the city dropped by 27 percent during the first six months of 2010 compared to the same time in 2009.

The report, released by San Diego Association of Governments, shows that both violent and property crimes dropped.

In the county, violent crimes dropped by 8 percent and property crimes dropped by 2 percent compared to the same period last year. Both the violent and property crime rates were at 10-year lows, according to SANDAG.

''While this trend is not guaranteed to continue for the rest of the year, these data point toward a continued decrease in crime in spite of difficult economic conditions that have caused concerns in some sectors that crime rates mighty go up,'' said Cynthia Burke, SANDAG's director of criminal justice research.
