For unknown reasons, Cantrell lost control of the car, which skidded sideways off the road and down an embankment. The Mercedes hit several trees and bushes before it struck a large tree approximately 30 feet off the roadway, inflicting severe head injuries to Cantrell, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Sheriff’s deputies received conflicting reports about a passenger that had been ejected from the vehicle, but a search of the area and continued interviews with witnesses concluded that the driver was the only person in the vehicle, according to the department.
